Medical Facilities
By combining experienced Vets and good quality diagnositic equipment we are able to investigate a wide range of medical cases.
The team is led by Emma Alsop with Rachel Conwell as Consultant. Emma is supported by Gemma Dransfield and the interns.
We have a number of endoscopes including a 3metre Gastroscope which lets us image the stomach for gastric ulceration and pretty much any body cavity what we can get to. Together with the Laparoscope there isn’t much of the horse that we can’t get a reasonable look at, upper airway, trachea, lungs, sinuses, uterus, bladder, abdomen and potentially thorax too.
There are an array of ultrasound scanners in the clinic, some are mainly used for the reproductive and stud side, looking at ovaries and uteruses and scanning for pregnancy. We have a large higher quality machine that can image soft tissue and orthopaedic cases eg tendons, ligaments and joints as well as looking at the abdomen and chest.
Examination of the Heart can be very useful and we have a scanner that has a Doppler capability, this shows up blood flow as a colour which allows interpretation of both the volume, speed and direction of the blood flow. This is important when looking at leaking valves that are causing Murmurs.
We also have an exercising ecg, this allows us to see how the heart is behaving both at exercise and for prolonged periods when problems are of a more intermittent nature.
Having an on-site laboratory means that we can get results for our medical cases as we need them, this is especially useful for urgent cases such as sick horses overnight when quick results allows rapid changes in treatment to help optimise the care of the horse.
There are currently two X-ray machines that allow imaging of most parts of the horse, we have purchased a large ceiling-mounted gantry machine that will be housed in a separate X-ray room.
All our Radiography at the clinic is in the digital format and has been for several years, we have recently upgraded our machine to a more superior machine. Digital radiography gives much better image definition but also allows images to be e.mailed between Vets and also means storage and retrieval is much easier.
We also have a C-arm fluoroscopy machine which can provide real-time X-ray images which is very useful for swallowing studies or for checking on screw placement etc during surgical procedures.
