Laboratory

Based at our main surgery site on Salisbury Road, York; our laboratory undertakes a wide range of farm animal orientated tests.  This allows the tests to be carried promptly by our dedicated laboratory staff, and avoids the spoilage of delicate samples experienced when they are posted to external laboratories.
Mastitis Culture
Culture of the common causes of mastitis including:
Staphylococcus aureus
Streptococcus agalactiae
Streptococcus dysgalactiae
Streptococcus uberis
E. coli

Sensitivity of the bacteria is then tested against the major groups of antibiotic.

Cost includes veterinary interpretation and recommendation of treatment.

Serology

Blood test for antibody or antigen to common diseases and conditions including:

BVD
Leptospirosis
RSV
IBR
PI3

This can useful during investigation of problems and help in deciding if vaccination would be of benefit on your farm.

Neonatal Scour

Identification of the most common causes of scour:

Rotavirus
Coronavirus
Cryptosporidium
E coli
(Salmonella)

Cost includes advice on possible treatments and vaccination in light of the results.

Worm Egg Count

This has many uses in cattle, sheep and camelids:

Identification of cause of clinical disease
Prediction of when worming is due from a mixed sample
Identification of resistance by testing pre and post worming mixed samples

Colostrum Analysis

The IgG (antibody) content of both colostrum and the calf/lamb blood can be tested.

This is essential information since, as poor quality colostrum or failure of colostral antibody transfer is closely related to neonatal disease.

Metabolic Profiling

Measurement of chemicals in blood such as:

Albumin
Urea
GSH – Px (selenium)
BHB
TP
Magnesium
Glucose…

Can be used to assess any energy deficit, the suitability of nutrition, and the levels of certain vitamins.
