Diagnostic equipment – how we can find out what is wrong with your pet
Well equipped on site laboratory staffed by 2 technicians. This allows rapid diagnosis of disease and monitoring of your pets recovery. The laboratory facilities include.
Haematology - checking your pets blood cells for signs of infection or inflammation or for anaemia
Biochemistry -checking for chemical markers to see how healthy your pets organs are)
Bacteriology - culture facilities allow us to identify the causes of infections and plan the best treatments
Microscopy – identification of parasites on skin samples, faeces tests and checking urine for signs of bladder and kidney disease
Endoscopy
Our flexible endoscopes allow us to look into your pet’s insides to find out what is going wrong. This minimally invasive procedure can get us the answer to some problems without needing an operation.
Ultrasound scanner
Our colour-flow Doppler ultrasound machine allows us to look inside your pet and see the organs in real time. This can often be done without any sedation. This technique is ideal for looking at the abdominal organs and the heart. The colour-flow facility allows us to track the movement of blood within the heart and identify abnormalities.
Digital radiography
Just like digital cameras, digital radiography allows very rapid production of very high resolution images of your pet. This allows quicker diagnosis and the images now are so much more detailed it often allows more subtle changes changes to be identified. Radiography ( X-rays) are ideal to determine problems within bones and joints, as well as the lungs, bowel and urinary system. Some problems are much easier to diagnose with an x-ray than with the ultrasound, so occasionally we need to do both tests. Usually animals need sedating for radiography as they need to be very still.
Electrocardiography
Recording the trace of the electrical activity of your pets heart allows us to determine the cause of some heart conditions and also to monitor the effectiveness of treatment.
Doppler Blood Pressure
We commonly measure blood pressure in our patients as high blood pressure can cause serious problems such as strokes and blindness especially in older cats. The early signs can be difficult to spot, and often this test is recommend after a routine annual health check. Treatment to control blood pressure can help prevent blindness developing. The process is very similar to that in people except we always use a special Doppler probe to detect the pulse either in your pet’s limb or tail.
Anaesthetic monitoring equipment
Our nurses and vets are trained to use the most modern anaesthetic agents. We monitor our patients carefully to ensure their health through the anaesthetic period. Our monitoring equipment includes blood pressure measurement, capnography, pulse oximetry and electrocardiography.
Dentistry
Dental scaling is performed using an ultrasonic scaler and a high speed polisher which leave the teeth with a smooth clean surface. This helps to slow down the future build up of tartar and the gums to heal. We have high pressure dental drills to allow tooth and root extractions.
Piped Gases
Our purpose built premises have allowed us to incorporate designs such as the piping of anaesthetic gases directly to each room they are needed from a central gas store. Gases that have been breathed out can be actively scavenged away for staff and patient safety.
Two Operating Theatres with a separate surgical preparation area
This allows us to maintain the highest levels of sterility reducing the chance of wound infections.
Incubator and Intensive Care
Kennels can be warmed and oxygenated to speed up recovery and aid in the treatment of shocked patients with our incubator and intensive care kennels. Fluids can be provided with an infusion pump to allow controlled treatments.
Vivarium
Temperature, lighting and humidity can be controlled in our exotic animal hospitalisation area. This is vital to ensure their health during any hospitalisation.
